The public prosecutor's office in Bad Kreuznach is investigating the Rhine-Hessian winery Ortwin Welter on "suspicion of gang and commercial fraud and deception according to the wine and organic farming law". This is reported by the "Allgemeine Zeitung" in Mainz and the "Weinwirtschaft". Eight accused employees are said to have inadmissibly blended quality wines from different growing regions, for example from Rheinhessen and the Palatinate, as well as wine from different quality levels. "We are not talking about a few bottles, but about a quantity in the direction of one million litres", the "Weinwirtschaft" quotes Michael Brandt, chief public prosecutor. A small part of the wine could also have been falsely declared as organic wine. The company's lawyer wants to refute this. The fraud was discovered during an inspection of the wine control. According to the public prosecutor's office, the proceedings will "take quite some time".

According to "Weinwirtschaft", the managing director of the company has resigned from his job in the meantime. The ongoing business operations are currently being managed by external management consultants who have specialised in working in the wine industry.
