Spain's wine consumption in 2022 did not reach the levels of 2021 and 2019, the last year before the Covid 19 pandemic. Figures just published by the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OeMV), based on data from January to November, indicate a decline of 7 to 8 per cent for the whole year compared to 2021. In some months, such as September and November, consumption even fell by 28 and 31 percent. Therefore, OeMV assumes that Spaniards drank half a million hl (50 million litres) less wine in 2022. This means that consumption is significantly below the 11.1 million hl of 2019.

Due to inflation and the increased sales prices, the decline is not reflected in the value of the wines, which gives a distorted picture. In the export figures recently published by the OeMV, the value of cask wine exports rose by almost twelve per cent, while the volume fell by almost 12 per cent.
