The vineyard area in Spain has fallen below 900,000 hectares for the first time in 2025. It currently stands at 889,470 hectares, which represents a decline of 21,612 hectares or 2.4 percent compared to 2024. These figures have been published by the Wine Market Observatory (OIVE) of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture. Since records began in 1980, the vineyard area in Spain has shrunk by around 750,000 hectares or 46 percent. This corresponds to the vineyard area in France. In 2020, Spain's vineyard area was still around 911,000 hectares according to the statistical office Eurostat.

Castile-La Mancha is the region with the largest vineyard area, accounting for 47.5 percent of the total vineyard area (422,391 hectares). With around 81,000 hectares, Castile-León has overtaken Extremadura (image) with 76,500 hectares and is in second place. Extremadura has lost 4,349 hectares or 5.4 percent of its vineyard area. Castile-León, with an increase of 1.2 percent, Andalusia (up one percent), and Rioja (up 0.2 percent) are the only regions that have grown compared to 2024.
