Wine production in Spain in the 2017 vintage will be around 20 percent lower than in 2016, according to a forecast published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture. According to the forecast, the volume of grape must produced was 17.6 percent lower than the average for the past six vintages due to spring frosts, drought and heat.
The European Commission had already announced in October 2017 that wine production would fall to a 36-year low in 2017. The EU's estimate for Spain at that time was still 15 percent lower than in 2016, which means that the figure now published is even worse. The EU forecast for Italy at that time was a 23 percent lower wine production and for France a 19 percent lower harvest.
