Thanks to the frosty temperatures, many winegrowers in almost all German wine-growing regions were able to successfully harvest Eiswein grapes in the past few days, according to information from the German Wine Institute (DWI). In many regions the thermometer dropped to minus ten degrees Celsius last weekend for the harvest of the noble sweet speciality, preferably of the varieties Riesling, Pinot Noir, Silvaner or Chardonnay.

In the Palatinate, for example, the Frey winery in Essingen was able to harvest a Chardonnay with around 148 Gard Oechsle on Monday, according to a statement by the Pfalzwein e.V.. In addition to Chardonnay, Weinkontor Edenkoben also brought in Cabernet Mitos, Riesling and Pinot Blanc. The Nett winery in Neustadt-Geinsheim harvested about 500 litres of Goldmuskateller from the Neustadter Pfaffengrund vineyard by hand in the freezing cold of -9.5 degrees.

In St. Martin, the Consulate of Wine brought in its Riesling. Furthermore, the Knauff winery from Gönnheim harvested Scheurebe with 158 degrees Oechsle in the single vineyard Gönnheimer Mandelgarten. The Anselmann winery accepted the Scheurebe and Riesling grape varieties. In Kallstadt, the Schröder-Weisenborn winery was also able to harvest two grape varieties: Scheurebe with 155 degrees Oechsle and Huxelrebe with 165 degrees Oechsle.

For ice wine, temperatures of at least minus seven degrees Celsius are required. But the colder it gets, the higher the concentration effect in the grape berries, which is an advantage with the very sweet grapes of the 2018 vintage. This year, the willingness to leave grapes hanging for the ice wine harvest was particularly high because the very long grapes remained exceptionally healthy.
