A study by the University of Cambridge shows that using smaller glasses can reduce wine consumption. In experiments with 217 British households, the scientists found a 6.5 percent decrease in wine consumption when the study participants drank from smaller glasses. During the four-week study period, participants were randomly assigned glasses with a capacity of 290 millilitres or 350 millilitres.

The study, published in the journal Addiction, also examined bottle sizes. The households participating in the study drank from 0.75 litre bottles for a fortnight and from half bottles (0.375 l) for a fortnight. Wine consumption decreased by 3.6 percent when half bottles were used as opposed to 0.75 litre bottles. According to the researchers, this decrease was negligible.

The researchers said the results were consistent with existing evidence on the impact of glass sizes in the hospitality industry. However, further research is needed to draw firm conclusions, they said. If the effects of wine glass size on alcohol consumption prove to be reliable and persist over a longer period of time, smaller wine glasses in private households could indeed contribute to the longer-term reduction of alcohol consumption.
