The Spanish sparkling wine DO Cava recorded a supply and sales decline of over 13 percent to 218 million bottles in 2024 due to the droughts of the past three years. However, in many countries, the selling price was increased. Notably, there is rapid growth in organically grown Cavas. Their sales rose by over 15 percent to 37.3 million bottles. The premium line "Cava de Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado" also increased by 13.3 percent, even by 58.5 percent in the home market. Starting in 2025, all Cavas de Guarda Superior will be organically certified.
In Spain, 78 million bottles were sold last year (down 3.5 percent), with their value increasing on average by 3.7 percent. 140 million bottles were exported, a decrease of 18 percent. Alone in Germany, sales fell by almost 20 million bottles. Belgium remains the most important foreign market with 20.3 million bottles (-7.80 percent compared to 2023), followed by the United States (-4.58 percent) and the United Kingdom (-11.66 percent). Japan (+4.6 percent), the Netherlands (+4 percent), and Sweden, on the other hand, showed sales increases.
The category Elaborador Integral ("Integral Producer") is also growing. It now includes 17 wineries. The Elaborador Integral label is exclusively reserved for those cellars that press 100 percent of their base wine themselves, produce the entire Cava on-site, and do not purchase already riddled or aged bottles from other producers. The president of DO Cava, Javier Pagés, remains optimistic despite ongoing problems with drought and quantity losses. The consistent focus on sustainability, quality, and traceability has shown positive effects.
