In the Russian Federation, a new wine law, which is much stricter than before, has recently come into force.

The law "Viticulture and Wine Making in the Russian Federation" defines for the first time that wine must consist of fermented grapes. It must have an alcohol content between 7.5 and 18 percent by volume. In addition, it is now defined that "Russian wine" may only be produced from domestic grapes. Until now this was not clearly regulated. From now on, wines that are put on the market must document the grape variety, origin and vintage on the label. The quantities harvested in the growing regions must be reported to the authorities by 1 December of the year of harvest. In addition, the cultivation areas with defined designations of origin are to be protected. With the new rules, the country wants to promote its viticulture and at the same time make fraud more difficult.

According to the OIV, Russia currently has around 95,000 hectares of vineyards, while in Germany the figure is just under 105,000 hectares according to current figures.
