The American wine forger Rudy Kurniawan is released early from prison after seven years in a Texas jail. He is to be deported from the USA immediately after his release, US media report. Where to, is not known yet. Kurniawan was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2014 for selling fake top wines to unsuspecting collectors for around 1.3 million dollars between 2004 and 2012. In addition, he had deposited counterfeit wines as security for a loan of three million dollars. At an auction in 2006, he also allegedly sold 12,000 fake bottles at auction.

In addition he was sentenced to pay 28.4 million dollars in compensation to the victims. The early release is based on an agreement with the court, for which Kurniawan has to pay another 20 million dollars.

Rudy Kurniawan is the first person to be sentenced to prison in the USA for falsifying wine. His case was featured in the documentary "Sour Grapes" (Netflix)
