The red wine cuvées from Châteauneuf-du-Pape will in future be given smaller batches of white wine to give them more acidity and freshness and to reduce the alcohol levels. The winemakers of the region fear that the rising temperatures due to climate change will cause the alcohol level to rise and the amount of tannins to increase, while the acidity will drop sharply. Véronique Maret of the Domaine de la Charbonnière explained this to the "decanter".
Some of her wines of the 2016 vintage contain 16% alcohol by volume. Now she and many other winemakers from the 290 estates want to revive the regional tradition of adding shares of, for example, the white varieties Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Picardin and Clairette. This would counter the problem of wines that are too dense and "broad".
Véronique Maret has had vines of these varieties planted in the vineyards planted with red varieties in order to harvest, macerate and ferment them together. This would not affect the colour and would ensure consistent aromas.
