The Chilean winery Viña Los Vascos is launching a new premium red wine called “Cañeten”. According to the magazine The Drinks Business, the bottle price is around 170 Euros. Los Vascos is part of the wine company Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, which owns ten top wineries in Bordeaux, Languedoc, and Chablis, as well as in South America and China.
The “Cañeten” is a blend of 54 percent Syrah, 43 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and three percent Cabernet Franc. It results from a 20-year terroir research project that identified the best locations and exposures for each grape variety based on soil samples.
The grapes come from the cool-climate location La Aguina, 40 kilometers from the Pacific. The vineyard has existed since 2013 and is divided into eight parcels. It lies between two mountain ridges and is surrounded by forest and grassland. The wine owes its name to Cerro Cañetén, which, as the highest peak of the coastal mountain range, significantly influences the microclimate in the vineyard.
The first vintage of the wine is 2022. It will be available in the UK, Belgium, and Germany, as well as in Canada and Hong Kong.
