Valerio Civa:
The man who rediscovered Ribolla Gialla

Valerio Civa (59) began his career as a wine representative at the age of 22 in the Parma region. Within ten years, he founded his own company and became one of the first in Italy to offer high-quality wines from renowned brands with an efficient logistics service in modern trade.

Thus, the Civa Group Distribuzione SRL was born, which developed into one of the most significant companies in Italian wine distribution with an annual turnover of 70 million euros and 60 employees.

The rebirth of Ribolla Gialla

In 2016, Valerio Civa decided to invest in Friuli and become active as a producer himself. This led to the creation of Tenimenti Civa, a winery with over 75 hectares of vineyards, aiming to reinterpret and enhance traditional grape varieties – foremost Ribolla Gialla.

Long underestimated, Valerio recognized the potential of this indigenous grape variety and focused on its development. In collaboration with the University of Udine and the Rauscedo nurseries, he conducted a comprehensive research and experimentation phase. Nine different clones of Ribolla Gialla were examined, including some rediscovered in old vineyards. The result: three completely new, previously unknown clones that are now exclusively available at Tenimenti Civa.

Today, Ribolla Gialla is on a successful course – not least thanks to the commitment of Valerio Civa. Tenimenti Civa is one of the main players in the region.
