The consumption of red wine in France has decreased by 32 percent since 2011. This was the result of a study by the Kantar consulting company. According to the study, wine consumption in the country as a whole has dropped considerably, but especially that of red wine. Especially younger people drink less wine: In the age group of 19 to 35 years, the number of red wine consumers decreased by 7 percent in the past decade. This could be due to a change in eating habits. According to this, red wine is perceived as a part of table culture - especially as an accompaniment to red meat. However, meat consumption has decreased by 12 percent in France between 2008 and 2018, according to a study by the Centre de Recherche pour l'Étude et l'Observation des Conditions de Vie (CRÈDOC). In addition, less wine is being drunk at the table.

According to the research company Wine Intelligence, today it is mainly members of the age group over 55 who drink wine in everyday life. Younger consumers only open it on extraordinary occasions such as banquets or parties. For this, however, they are willing to spend more money.

In the group of 18 to 24-year-olds, 42 percent prefer other drinks to wine. Only 29 percent of them say they like the taste of wine. Many of them avoid tannic, woody wines and prefer light wines with low alcohol content and a fruitier taste.

For the French wine industry, it is the second piece of bad news this month. In early November, a report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that France would have suffered the greatest economic losses from climate change of any country in the world.
