At this year's international charity auction "Barolo en primeur", a record sum of 987,000 euros was achieved. The auction took place for the fourth time at the castle of Grinzane Cavour and was conducted by the auction house Christie's. It was broadcast live from Christie's headquarters in New York and London.
A total of 14 barriques of Barolo Vigna Gustava 2023, sourced from the vineyards at the foot of the castle, were auctioned. Donato Lanati is responsible as the oenologist for the project. Additionally, 1,229 bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco (938 bottles of 0.75 liters, 243 magnums, and 48 double magnums) were auctioned, donated by 80 wineries.
Bids, which were also placed online via the Auction Collective platform, came from Italy, the USA, England, Canada, and China. The proceeds will support charitable and cultural projects in Piedmont. The final sum is expected to exceed the million mark when the fifteenth barrique is auctioned at the World Auction of the White Truffle of Alba on November 10. The proceeds from this barrique will benefit the international charity organization Mother’s Choice, which has been supporting orphans and young mothers in need since 1987.
