The VDP auction Réserve in Kloster Eberbach has set a new record: 3,990 bottles changed hands for 350,419 euros. Rare large bottles were particularly sought after. Three double magnums of the Steinberger "Wild Ferment" Riesling from the Kloster Eberbach winery were auctioned for 1,963.50 euros each. The Methuselah bottle of the "Monte Vacano" Riesling from the Robert Weil winery fetched 13,328 euros.
Aged rarities were also present at the auction: The 1985 Steinberger Riesling Ice Wine and two bottles of 1976 Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Ice Wine from the August Eser winery found new owners for 357 euros each. A vertical collection of six vintages of Quercus Superior Pinot Noir from the Allendorf winery was auctioned for 856.80 euros.
"Great wines preserve values and create connections across generations," emphasized Dieter Greiner, managing director of the Kloster Eberbach winery. Despite economic uncertainties, the prices achieved showed that "craftsmanship excellence and authenticity endure.".
With the charity wine "Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Natur Cabinet" from 1925 from the Kloster Eberbach winery, a significant amount was raised again. The net hammer price of 11,000 euros is to be received by the Alzheimer Society Rheingau-Taunus e.V.
The auction is the oldest still active German wine auction and attracts over 400 industry visitors and wine enthusiasts annually. The next VDP auction Réserve will take place on March 7, 2026, at Kloster Eberbach.
