The annual charity wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune in Burgundy exceeded all expectations. All 362 lots were auctioned at prices far above estimates. The 228-litre charity barrel "Pièce des Présidents" (Presidential Barrel) from the Corton Renardes vineyard alone fetched 800,000 euros, surpassing last year's record. The proceeds go to the Fédération Nationale Solidarité Femmes, which uses them to support its fight against violence against women, and the Institut Curie, which aims to promote medical research against breast cancer.
In total, the result of the 161st auction, in which 700 people participated, amounts to 13.5 million euros, exceeding estimates by about 85 percent. The average price increase for white wine is 115 percent and for red wine 56 percent.
