With the traditional preview at the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden, the VDP presents the "Grosse Gewächse“ (GG) of the current 2021 and 2020 red wine vintages to the trade public, as well as GGs from the 2017 to 2019 vintages that have only just been released. They will go on sale from 1 September. This year, 170 invited journalists, bloggers, traders and importers from 22 countries will taste around 450 wines in 82 flights over three days. 30 service staff will bring the desired wines to each taster's table.

In total, the 200 VDP wineries will present 629 GGs from 327 sites this autumn, with an average quantity of around 2,800 bottles. The Riesling continues to dominate with around 60 per cent, followed by the Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), which accounts for 20 per cent. Behind them are Pinot Blanc with six per cent and Silvaner with four per cent.

According to the VDP, the average price is currently around 40 euros, although some wines are also available for tasting at prices of up to 120 euros. Some wines are subscribed months in advance, some are auctioned at top prices.
