The legendary port wine producer Ian Symington died a few days ago at the age of 90. The British citizen was born in 1929 in Porto (Portugal) and attended the Oporto British School there. After military service, he returned to Portugal in 1949 and worked with his father and two of his uncles in the family port wine business. In the decades after the war, he played a crucial role in reviving and rebuilding the moribund port wine business in the Douro Valley. In 1983, he was appointed President of the British Wine & Spirit Benevolent Society.

In 1954, he married his wife Cynthia and became the father of two daughters and a son. The pot wine business is now run by six family members, the youngest being his granddaughter Vicky.
