The 2018 vintage in Portugal has the smallest harvest in 20 years. According to figures from the Portuguese statistics authority, the harvest is only 5.2 million hl - 22 percent less than last year. The reason for the large shortfall is the weather: after extreme heat in August, storms and massive rainfall with flooding have drastically reduced the harvest. All Portuguese growing regions were affected. Only the southern Alentejo had been able to bring in a harvest quantity as in 2017.

These figures are in stark contrast to the other European states. Overall, the European harvest increased by 13 percent to 279 million hl - one of the largest in the last 20 years.
