According to a survey conducted by the market research institute OpinionWay on behalf of the "Wine Paris" trade fair, Paris is the world's most important capital for wine consumption. According to the figures, around 709 million bottles of wine are opened in the French capital every year. Paris has about 2.2 million inhabitants and 33 million tourists per year. "The experience of enjoying wine is in itself a form of tourism in its own right," said Philippe Lefebvre, who presented the figures in Paris.

French wines are drunk predominantly: 94 percent of the inhabitants of France enjoy wines from France, if possible with a regional reference to their origin.
