The family who own Château Lynch Bages in Pauillac took over Haut-Batailley a few days ago. This was reported by the British Wine Spectator. According to the report, the Cazes family has bought the Cinquièmes Cru estate with 46 hectares of vineyards. At present, only about half of the vineyards there are in production - and this factor has made the estate extremely sought-after, writes Wine Spectator.

Currently Haut-Batailley produces about 9000 crates per year. Until now, the farm was managed by François-Xavier Borie, the owner of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste. His family also owned the estate. Nothing has been revealed about the purchase price. However, vineyards in Pauillac currently cost on average between 1.5 and two million euros per hectare, classified areas are significantly more expensive. In the vineyards of Haut-Bailley there are currently 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot and five percent Cabernet Franc.

According to Wine Spectator, the new owners first want to start with a precise soil analysis of the vineyard areas that have not been cultivated since 1940. According to this, the family expressly denied rumours that some of the areas could be transferred to the well-known Château Lynch Bages. With the purchase, the Cazes family now owns a total of 15 percent of the vineyards in Pauillac.
