The international transport capacities of overseas shipping companies are currently so overloaded that freight prices are skyrocketing. This is what Clément Desbois, French export director of the transport company JF Hillebrand told the online magazine Vitisphère. For a 40-foot dry container, the global sea freight index is currently $10,000 (€8,600), which means a tenfold increase in the average price within two years, according to JF Hillebrand. Prices vary depending on the route. According to Desbois, it currently costs $7,000 to ship a container from Europe to the United States. In the summer of 2020, exporters would only pay 2,000 US dollars for it.Since the beginning of the pandemic, worldwide container logistics have been disrupted, and the wine industry has also been very badly affected. According to Desbois, overloaded port infrastructures lead to longer and longer waiting times for containers, which has an impact on the entire logistics chain due to a lack of stocks. According to Desbois, only 30 per cent of all ships are currently on time, which in turn has led to a chain reaction in the schedules.

Desbois does not see any improvement for 2022 either: container demand at the end of September 2021 had increased by 13 per cent compared to 2020 and by six per cent compared to 2019. He said he did not expect international traffic to return to normal before 2023.
