The online sale of wine in the European internal market is to become easier for customers and traders. This is what three ministers of the French government are demanding from the European Commission.

"In order to support the exports of wine producers, we call on the European Commission to create a one-stop shop for excise duties, which is essential to simplify online sales to private individuals in the European Union," said Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, Deputy Minister of Public Finance Olivier Dussopt and Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade Franck Riester in a joint letter to EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni.

The ministers stated that "the distance selling of excisable products" is "severely hampered by the high administrative burden and regulatory costs that weigh on operators". The French government therefore wants to achieve the establishment of a European working group to create "a one-stop shop for the payment of excise duties in the European Union, if possible as early as the second quarter of 2022".

Traders will thus no longer need an authorised business representative in each European country of destination to pay the tax. The European Confederation of Independent Winegrowers (CEVI) has been calling for this for some time. Italy, too, is campaigning for a reform of the payment of excise duty, because it restricts the sale of wine to private individuals throughout Europe.
