The French state-owned company for agricultural land purchases "Safer" ("Société d'aménagement foncier et d'établissement rurale") has published the development of vineyard prices in France. According to this, a hectare of AOP-classified vineyard cost on average 150,500 euros in 2020 - but only about 78,000 euros if the Champagne region is not taken into account. It accounted for about 52 percent of the value of all AOP areas in France in 2020, even though it has only seven percent of the cultivated area, Safer writes in his annual report about land prices.

In the Hérault department in Languedoc, on the other hand, AOP vineyards cost an average of just 17 500 euros per hectare last year, the same price as in 2019.

The most expensive vineyards in the country in 2020 were in the Côte d'Or: one hectare of Grand Cru land there was valued at 6.765 million euros. This represents a 4 per cent increase on 2019, according to Safer data, but the biggest price rises in 2020 were recorded in the main appellations of Bordeaux.

The growing regions with the ten most expensive wine sites on average according to Safer statistics
Pauillac: 2.8 million euros / ha (+22%)
Pomerol: 2 million euros / ha (+5 %)
White Burgundy Premier Cru (Côte d'Or): 1.69 million euros, (+2%)
St-Julien: 1,6 Mio Euro / ha(+23%)
Margaux: 1.5 million euros / ha (+15%)
Côte-Rôtie: 1,15 Mio Euro / ha (stable)

According to the figures, prices for AOP vineyards would have more than doubled since 1997. but some are still far below average.
