The project Old Vine Registry (OVR), the global database for documenting vineyards with vines over 35 years old, has reached the milestone of 10,000 entries. As of March 30, 2026, it recorded 10,043 vineyards with 42,751 hectares and 1,144 grape varieties in 42 countries. The directory, initiated in June 2023 by Jancis Robinson MW among others, is growing significantly faster than expected. The organizers had anticipated reaching this number only by 2027. Currently, there are 337 vineyards listed in Germany and 51 in Austria. Entries can be added online at any time by winemakers after free registration.
Alder Yarrow, initiator and head of the project, explains the significance of the project: "Old vineyards are among the most valuable agricultural and cultural assets in the wine world. However, until recently, there were no global efforts to systematically document where they are located, what grape varieties they contain, and how old they are. The registry aims to change that.".
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has officially defined the term "Old Vines" for grapevines that are at least 35 years old at the suggestion of the OVR. This means that vineyards planted in 1991 and earlier can be included in the registry in 2026. The first competition for Old Vine Photography is open until May 5, 2026.
