The global wine-growing area changed only slightly in 2020, according to current statistics from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). According to the figures, Spain remains in first place with a share of 13 per cent, France follows in second place with eleven per cent, while China is close behind in third place. This is followed by Italy with ten per cent.

This can be attributed to plantings accelerating in the EU and slowing down in China. The OIV report reflects a continued stabilisation of the global vineyard area since 2017. The curve of new plantings worldwide has largely flattened over the past four years and even declined minimally in 2020, with the number reducing by 0.2 per cent to 7.3 million hectares. Wine production has also increased by only one percentage point compared to 2019, holding steady at 260 million hectolitres of wine.
