About one year after the first Corona lockdown, Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM) has presented the figures for wine sales in 2020. According to the figures of the market research institute GastroData, the Austrian gastronomy sector ordered about a third less domestic wine from wholesalers than in 2019. In contrast, consumption at home recorded significant increases: according to ÖWM, it rose by around 17 percent in volume and 18 percent in value. Food retail recorded a similar increase, with growth of around 16 per cent in volume and 17 per cent in value. At 47.3 per cent, almost every second Austrian wine consumer exclusively bought wines from their own country. This is the highest value since 1997, writes the ÖWM.

As a consequence of the closures of the stationary trade, a strong shift towards e-commerce could also be observed. According to the figures of the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK), the number of online wine buyers increased by 48 per cent to around 124,000 between October 2019 and 2020. These consumers spent just under 60 euros per purchase.
