Austria plans to support winegrowers by distilling wine for disinfectants. This is intended to reduce the large wine stock, which is caused by the collapsed market due to the Corona pandemic and the large quantities of wine from the 2018 and earlier harvests.
The programme will be used to purchase and distil around 10 million litres of wine from the 2018 and older harvests at a purchase price of 35 cents per litre. The distillation will be financed from the support programme of the Austrian Federal Government.
