In Austria, positive trends in wine sales during the lockdown phase are becoming apparent. This was determined by the market research institute GfK on behalf of Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM). According to the data, 2,800 surveyed, representative private households stated that they had bought almost 17 per cent more wine in retail outlets and spent 12 per cent more on it compared to the same period of the previous year. In addition, the frequency of wine purchases had increased, as had the amount of wine purchased per purchase.

In addition, the number of households that bought their wine from wineries had remained stable compared to the previous year. As expected, the Corona lockdown had led to increases in food retailing: compared to March and April of the previous year, seven percent more households stated that they had bought wine there.

Austrian wine had benefited particularly from this trend, with a sales increase of over 25 per cent. Sales of foreign wines fell by just under two per cent in the same period. The increase in sales of Austrian red and rosé wine by almost 51 per cent was remarkable, while white wine increased by more than 14 per cent. However, the turnover had only increased by twelve percent. This means that the additional bottles sold were bought at particularly favourable prices.
