A new appellation has been released a few days ago in the French growing region Côtes du Rhône Villages. Côtes du Rhône Villages Nyons is the 22nd AOC of the growing region and includes the villages of Nyons, Mirabel-aux-Baronnies, Piégon and Venterol. It covers around 300 hectares and was applied for by the local winegrowers in 1998, 22 years ago. Only dry red wines made from the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan grape varieties are allowed in the AOC. Already in 1994 Nyons became the first AOC in Europe for olive cultivation.
