The Norwegian government has banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in all restaurants. Among other restrictions such as limited access to gyms and swimming pools, extended masking requirements and stricter rules in schools, this is intended to slow the spread of the new covid variant Omicron.
The Norwegian Public Health Institute (FHI) warned that the country could face 90,000 to 300,000 new covid infections per day without the new regulations. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told a press conference, "There is no doubt that the new variant changes the rules. That's why we have to act quickly - and we have to act again, even if it feels like a lockdown to many."
