The closure manufacturer Vinventions has launched the new "Nomacorc Ocean" cork made from recycled plastics. According to the company, it is the first wine closure in the world to be made from so-called Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP).

About 80 per cent of plastic waste washes into the sea from the mainland. "The raw material for Nomacorc Ocean closures comes from the coastal areas of Southeast Asia, where most of the world's plastic waste ends up in the oceans. For us, this is an effective measure against pollution," Romain Thomas, Nomacorc product manager at Vinventions, says about the new closure.

Vinventions chose the Sicilian winery Donnafugata and its white wine Damarino for the launch of the cork. By using the cork, Donnafugata recycled 1.15 tonnes of waste, he said.

"We grew up by the sea, our vineyards are surrounded by the sea. We are proud that Vinventions chose us for this project because it gives us a tangible result in our commitment to sustainability," say José and Antonio Rallo, owners of Donnafugata. The Damarino Sicilia DOC went on sale at the beginning of February.
