The State Viticultural Institute Freiburg (WBI) has presented the new red wine cuvée "Tamino" made from Piwi grape varieties. The cuvée is part of the project "Establishing wines from fungus-resistant grape varieties on the market", which has been running at the WBI since spring 2021. It is intended to support wine producers in marketing wines from Piwi varieties and at the same time raise consumer awareness. The Hummel, Kuckuckshof, Maier, Andreas Dilger, Schmidt and Zähringer wineries, the Britzingen winegrowers' cooperative, the Freiburg State Wine Estate and Roter Bur Glottertäler winegrowers are involved in the "Tamino" project.

The participating winegrowers had agreed in advance on the wine profile, which should be defined by drinking pleasure and high quality. Now the different 'Tamino' wines were presented for the first time. "The first 'Tamino' wines taste promising - they are really fun to drink," was an initial conclusion by Kolja Bitzenhofer from the State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg.

"Climate change and the accompanying extreme weather conditions pose great challenges for our winegrowers. We need suitable measures in organic viticulture to protect the harvests and to ensure that our farms can operate adequately and sustainably. With the introduction of the red wine cuvée 'Tamino' made from fungus-resistant grape varieties, we want to open a new chapter in viticulture in order to stay on course for growth with our organic wine production and to reduce plant protection to a minimum," said Peter Hauk, Minister for Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection of Baden-Württemberg, at the press conference. The federal state is promoting the project under the "Bio aus Baden-Württemberg" action plan.
