The new free online tool grapevinevariety.com identifies grape varieties specifically suited to growing in warmer climates. It has stored data on 465 different varieties and suggests which grape varieties are best suited to each requirement based on the selection of specific criteria to be made. The tool, funded by Wine Australia, brings together information and data collected over six years in various research projects, including phenology, growth characteristics and aromatics. Users can access it in two ways: either by selecting a known variety or using the sorting function to search for suitable varieties. One of the developers, Peter Clingeleffer, says of grapevinevariety.com: "The tool identifies varieties with a short growing season or less foliage area to reduce water requirements and pest and disease control efforts. It will enable the wine sector to identify varieties suitable for wine production under future climate change scenarios - especially in warmer climates".
