Bioethanol producer TotalEnergies has announced that its new race car fuel "Excellium Racing 100" for the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans will be made from leftovers from the French wine industry. It is to be introduced for the coming season of the FIA World Endurance Championship for racing cars. It is made from leftovers from wine production such as yeast and grape marc. According to the company, the production process includes "industrial fermentation, distillation and dehydration". This base is blended with ETBE (ethyl tertiary butyl ether), a by-product of ethanol, and various performance additives, it says.

The fuel should make it possible to reduce the CO2 emissions of the race cars by at least 65 per cent," says a statement from TotalEnergies, the official fuel supplier of the 24-hour race. Several research projects have already looked into producing climate-friendly fuel from the leftovers of wine production.
