The value of Austrian wine exports grew by 6.4 percent to 231 million euros in 2022. This represents a new sales record - with a slight decline in volume of minus 3.5 percent and 67.7 million litres. The average price per litre of exported wine was 3.42 euros. These figures, based on figures from Statistics Austria, were announced by Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM).

Sparkling wine increased in value by over 19 per cent in 2022, white quality wines by almost 8 per cent. Austria's wines achieved the greatest increases in value in Finland (62 per cent), Canada (47 per cent) and Denmark (29 per cent). The Netherlands did very well with an increase of 17 per cent, the USA with eleven per cent, Switzerland with 8.6 per cent and Sweden with seven per cent. Growth was also achieved by Japan with 61 per cent and South Korea with 26.4 per cent.

In Germany, the largest export market, however, the export value declined slightly, as more of inexpensive tank wine was exported, which reduced sales of more expensive bottled wines. Almost 16 per cent less wine by value was exported to China, and the UK business lost 38 per cent in value.

The shifts also reshuffle the list of the ten most important export markets for Austrian wine. In first place is undisputed Germany with a share of 40.5 per cent, followed by Switzerland with 11 per cent. In third place are the USA and the Netherlands with 9 percent each. They are followed by Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Czech Republic. These countries were not in the top ten just a few years ago.
