The online database Old Vine Registry (OVR) has recently surpassed the mark of 4,000 registered vineyards with at least 35-year-old vines. The directory initiated by Jancis Robinson MW in June 2023 is the first and largest database on this topic. The OVR is publicly accessible and funded through crowdfunding. The establishment was supported by Jackson Family Wines.

In June 2023, the database started with 2,183 entries. Currently, 4,193 vineyards covering a total area of 12,573 hectares are recorded. In 2025, vineyards planted in 1990 can also be included, as they will have reached the necessary age. "Old vines have adapted to stress over decades and even centuries. They are often more resilient in times of drought and heatwaves," writes the OVR. Meanwhile, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has officially defined the term "Old Vines" as at least 35-year-old vines. It has called for all wine regions worldwide to "promote and support the recording of old vineyards and old vines.".

The Old Vine Registry continues to seek volunteers to research old vineyards. Additionally, it needs supporters to financially promote the non-profit project. As part of the "Heritage Vine Hunt Contest", contributors with the most entries are awarded annually. By the end of June 2027, the organizers aim to reach the goal of 10,000 recorded vineyards. The overall winner can win a trip to the Old Vine Conference, among other prizes. Germany with 120 and Austria with 14 entries are still underrepresented in the registry according to OVR. Entries can be added online .
