Château Mouton-Rothschild***** has presented the artist label of the new 2022 vintage. It was designed by the French painter Gérard Garouste and shows a ram ("Mouton"), the front of the Château, and a portrait of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. He took over the management of the estate in 1922 and began bottling the wines directly at the Château for the first time in 1924, which was unusual at that time. Since 1945, the Baron has commissioned an artist each year to design the label. In 1973, he achieved the elevation of Château Mouton-Rothschild to Premier Grand Cru Classé. It was the only change to the classification of Bordeaux estates from 1855.
Garouste was inspired for the painting through conversations with the grandson of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild. In his autobiography "Vivre la Vigne," published in 1981, the Baron asked whether the hundredth anniversary of his takeover of Château Mouton-Rothschild would be celebrated. This wish has now been fulfilled by his descendants.
