The state-owned Moldovan winery Cricova has removed the wines of Vladimir Putin from an exhibition. This exhibition honors prominent politicians who have visited the cellar. Putin celebrated his 50th birthday at Cricova, which features 120 kilometers of underground tunnels, and received a collection of wines as a gift from the then Moldovan president. These were included in an exhibition of famous visitors along with a picture of the Russian head of state. Among others, wines and images of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, are on display. The magazine "Decanter" commented on the continued display of the wines and the image of Hermann Göring, Hitler's right-hand man: "His presence underscores how bad your reputation must be before you are removed from this exhibition."

Sorin Maslo, the director of Cricova, explained that he received many questions about why Putin and his wines were still visible. Therefore, he had them moved to a secluded, dark area of the winery so that "no one has to deal with him anymore," as Maslo stated. The removal of Putin's wines from the exhibition is a symbolic gesture and reflects the strained relations between Moldova and Russia. Moldova was a significant wine supplier to Russia until 2013. Then Moscow imposed an embargo on Moldovan wine after the country signaled its ambitions to join the EU. In October 2024, Moldovan voters approved a constitutional amendment aimed at removing Moldova from Moscow's sphere of influence and bringing the country closer to the EU.
