A meta-study cited by the Wine Information Council demonstrates a significant correlation between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the risk of suffering a stroke. Moderate consumption thus means a lower stroke risk, while heavy consumption indicates an increased risk. Wine has been identified as having a stronger protective effect than other alcoholic beverages.
For this work, the authors led by Ahmad A. Toubasi from the medical university of Jordan analyzed a total of 125 studies with over 21 million participants. It is considered the largest and most current investigation on this topic. The authors emphasize that the results vary depending on influencing factors, including the type of alcoholic beverage. According to the results, moderate wine consumption clearly correlates with a lower risk of stroke and resulting mortality. They conclude that their analysis provides robust evidence for a positive impact of moderate wine consumption.
Doctors should inform their patients about the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption, but should not overlook the importance of moderate consumption, especially of wine.
