The restaurant guide Guide Michelin will also evaluate wineries starting in 2026. In its classification, up to three grapes will be awarded. Criteria include the quality of viticulture (soil fertility, health and care of the vines), technical skills in winemaking, identity (how well the wines convey their origin), balance of the wines, and consistency of quality across multiple vintages. This aims to honor not only the wines themselves but also the people behind them and their work.
The evaluations will be conducted by a team of professionals – former sommeliers, expert critics, or production specialists. They follow a fixed scheme and collaboratively develop the awards. All evaluators are employed by the Michelin Group to ensure independence. The first wineries will be awarded in Bordeaux and Burgundy. In the future, more regions are to follow.
