In the alcohol monopolies of Norway, Finland and Sweden, sales of German wines rose dramatically in the first half of 2020. This was reported by the German Wine Institute.

The monopolies recorded strong growth in wine sales, after purchases had shifted more to the retail trade due to the gastronomy closed down due to corona. German white wines had profited more than average from this development. This was particularly evident in Finland, where the positive sales trend of German white wines has intensified again since the beginning of the year. At 38 percent, the increase in sales was twice as high as in the entire white wine sector, which grew by 19 percent.

White wine sales in Norway rose by as much as 42.6 percent in the first half of the year. Here, German white wines showed above-average growth of 45.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. German red wines and rosés, which are still rather unknown there, also increased significantly, starting from a low level. Sales of German red wine doubled, rosés even rose by 137 percent.

In Sweden, the increase in sales of German white wines was at the same level as the total sales of white wine, which rose by around ten per cent. This gives them a market share of 10.2 per cent. In Finland the share rose to 19 per cent and in Norway even to 27.6 per cent. This is a worldwide peak value. There, sales of German red wine also grew by 22.7 per cent, compared to a seven per cent increase in total red wine sales in the country.
