Mosel winemaker Markus Molitor has been awarded the Walter Scheel Medal. Since 2014, this award has recognized an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the preservation and promotion of culinary culture in Europe.

Markus Molitor receives this honor for his decades-long commitment to viticulture in the Mosel and Saar regions. The jury's statement reads: "His innovative spirit, pioneering drive, uncompromising quality standards, and his distinctive, nature- and terroir-driven approach have made him a central figure in the advancement of the ancient winemaking tradition in the Mosel and Saar. The awarding of the Walter Scheel Medal to Markus Molitor recognizes an exceptional cultural and entrepreneurial achievement – not least through the recultivation of numerous historically significant vineyards."

The Walter Scheel Medal is awarded in memory of the fourth President of Germany. For Scheel, the European idea was a central value of his political work. He was also one of the few top politicians in Germany who placed a high value on culinary culture.

Markus Molitor joins a prestigious circle of award recipients. Renowned chefs such as Alain Ducasse, Ferran Adrià, and Eckart Witzigmann, the Italian winemaker legend Angelo Gaja, the Austrian glassblowing dynasty Riedel, and the founder of Slow Food, Carlo Petrini, have already received the medal.

The official award ceremony will take place on Monday, December 9, at the Markus Molitor winery in Bernkastel-Wehlen.
