The Tuscan wine giant Marchesi Frescobaldi has acquired seven hectares of vineyards on Etna from the Moretti Cuseri family. The areas in the Contrada Santo Spirito (Randazzo) directly border the Tenuta delle Terre Nere winery, in which Frescobaldi has already been involved since the previous year.
The newly purchased vineyards are not intended to form an independent label but will be integrated into the existing structure. The development of an additional cru wine within the operation is planned. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Prices for Etna-DOC crus currently reach up to 90,000 euros per hectare.
With the purchase, Frescobaldi expands its vineyard area on Etna to a total of around 47 hectares (including Terre Nere). A yearly production of about 220,000 bottles is aimed for, depending on harvest conditions and quality.
Strategically, Frescobaldi justifies the move with efficiency and quality aspects: contiguous vineyard areas facilitate management and allow for better control of wine production. Additionally, the company sees new development potential in the Etna appellation. Alongside the expansion in Sicily, Frescobaldi is also increasing its presence in other regions, including Montepulciano.
