The Italian Luigi Moio has been elected the new President of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris. He prevailed against his Australian competitor Tony Battaglene and succeeds the Brazilian Regina Vanderlinde. Moio is professor of oenology at the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Naples and owns the Quintodecimo winery in Irpinia (Campania). He is considered a leading authority on aroma research and is a member of the Accademia der Georgofili and the Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino. Moio is the author of numerous books, including "Il Respiro del Vino" (in German: Der Atem des Weins), published in 2016, which has become one of the world's most important publications on the subject of aromas.

In 1998, he became a scientific expert of the Ministry of Agriculture for the OIV's Enology Commission, and in 2015 he was elected its president. For more than 25 years, he has been working on the sensory, biochemical and technological aspects of wine aroma, with a particular focus on varietal originality. With his studies, he has contributed significantly to the recultivation and valorisation of numerous autochthonous grape varieties of southern Italy.
