Two nights of devastating frost have caused massive damage to more than 10,000 hectares of vineyards and other crops in Mendoza, Argentina. Temperatures there dropped to as low as -4.5°C. The regional government of Mendoza, Argentina's oldest and most important wine-growing region, has declared a state of agricultural emergency. This is reported by Amanda Barnes, South America correspondent of the trade magazine DrinksBusiness. In European November, spring is already ending there with an average daily temperature of just under 21 degrees.
According to the report, vineyards in the San Carlos region in the southern Uco Valley were the hardest hit, with some wineries reporting the complete loss of their vines. The damage in eastern Mendoza, where the vines were mostly already in flower, is also likely to have a direct impact on vintage yields. The Rivadavia region in the east, which suffered significant damage in the frost event, has already cancelled its traditional end-of-year "Vendimia" celebrations.
