The Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) celebrates its centenary. Today's Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants with sites at Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen (viticulture), in Dossenheim (fruit growing), Quedlinburg, Berlin, Kleinmachnow, Braunschweig and Darmstadt was founded on 1 April 1921 as a branch for vine diseases of the Biologische Reichsanstalt on the Rittergut Grünhaus on the Ruwer. The JKI in its current structure came into being in 2008 through the merger with the Institute for Plant Protection in Fruit Growing. At that time, the viticulture section of the institute was relocated to Siebeldingen, where a new research greenhouse was built in 2013. The Bernkastel-Kues (Mosel) site was relocated with its research on steep slope viticulture to the JKI's experimental station at the DLR Mosel's Steillagenzentrum. The institute honoured its 100th anniversary with two scientific colloquia. In 2021, the new building in Dossenheim was also opened.
