Julia and Karoline Walch, the daughters of the South Tyrolean winemaker Elena Walch**** have opened their Trentodoc winery Moncalisse near Trento. There, they already vinified the grapes for around 13,000 bottles of sparkling wine last year. The visitor area has now also been completed. Tours of the cellars and vineyards as well as tastings are offered. Just like at the headquarters in Tramin, there is also a bistro.
The centerpiece of the winery, located about 600 meters above sea level, is a plot of Chardonnay vines over 65 years old in pergola training. In the future, Pinot Nero will also be processed, exclusively in Riserva quality with an aging period of 56 to 60 months. For this, the sisters are working with the cellar master of the Champagne house Gosset. They got to know the vineyard, shaped like a natural amphitheater, in 2016 and have been working on the project since then. With the support of their parents, they invested around eight million euros in the winery. Elena Walch, who handed over responsibility for the winery to her daughters five years ago, explained to the Italian wine magazine Winenews the reason: "We saw how motivated and determined they were to go their own way." A production of 100,000 bottles is planned in the next ten years.
