The 2017 vintage has been given the name "Frosttrotzer" in the Pfalz wine-growing region. This is to commemorate the mild consequences of the late frost damage in April 2017. The Pfalzweinwerbung had called on the winegrowers to find a name - and received almost 200 suggestions for the christening name of the new vintage. From these, the new wine sovereigns of the Palatinate now chose the winning name.

For many decades, the city of Neustadt an der Weinstraße determined the name of the new Palatinate vintage; from 1997 to 2011, a jury in Landau took over this task. Since no names were sought from 2012 onwards, the Pfalzer Gebietsweinwerbung Pfalzwein e. V. has now revived this tradition.

The tradition of naming vintages is already almost 90 years old. The first "speaking name" was given to the 1929 vintage: it was christened "Graf Zeppelin". This was the name of the airship that had set off on a round-the-world voyage shortly before the harvest began. Names often reveal something about major events or political and economic conditions. Currency reforms (1948 "D-Mark-Hupser", 2001 "Eurotiker") were just as influential as the political Großlage, for example 1931 "Krisling", 1962 "Mauerbrecher" and 1989 "Gorbischoppen". Weather and growth are also reflected - both positively, such as "Septembersonne" in 1987 and "Jahrhundertsommer" in 1994, and negatively: "Sonnenlechzer" in 1954, "Regentrotzer" in 1978.
