The police in Florence and the Italian Guardia di Finanza have arrested two people on suspicion of wine counterfeiting. They are accused of having sold fake bottles of Supertuscan Sassicaia worth more than two million euros. The Italian media report that this was preceded by years of extensive investigations. During a search of a warehouse in Milan, the police stopped the delivery of 41 crates of fake bottles of the year 2015. According to the investigators' findings, the accused sold about 700 crates per month over a long period of time. During the operation, the police seized more than 80,000 objects including labels, capsules, bottles and corks. They belonged to a total of 1,100 crates with 2015 Sassicaia at a market value of more than two million euros.

According to police investigations, the accused bought bottles in Turkey and had the labels for the 2010 to 2015 vintages produced in Bulgaria. The wine came from Sicily. The bottles were sealed with fake corks, capsules and tissue paper, which also came from Bulgaria. Their customers from Korea, Russia and China bought the wines at a price that was 70 percent below the usual market price.

The police arrested two people and are investigating four other suspects.
